Martzke’s Movie Suggestions When Weather Disappoints

Owen Martzke, Staff Writer, Advanced Journalism

So far this spring we have had some crazy weather days. Some days it has reached 70° with the sun shining and others it has been 32° and snowy. On days when the weather has been poor, I find it enjoyable to stay inside and enjoy the comforts of a good movie. Thus, I would like to share my recommendations for the best movies to watch on a rainy day.

My first suggestion is The Dark Knight. It is easily the greatest Batman movie ever and is considered a top 100 movie of all time. Director Christopher Nolan does an excellent job of portraying the dark nature of Gotham City and captivating the senses of the viewer. Christian Bale and Heath Ledger give incredible performances as Batman and the Joker that truly make the film great. It is a superhero movie made for those who aren’t necessarily big fans of the genre, and it’s rewatchability makes it a terrific choice for a rainy day.

My second suggestion is Step Brothers starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. This comedy is a favorite among many high school students because of its sarcastic, slapstick style of humor. Ferrell and Reilly are an incredible comedic duo and have teamed up several times, but this may be their best collaboration. The movie is best watched with friends as it is packed full with funny quotes that’ll be remembered for ages. I must add that some of the jokes may not be for everyone, but for those that enjoy Will Ferrell I highly recommend this classic.

Another great suggestion I have is Shutter Island starring Leonardo Dicaprio. This movie is a psychological thriller which may not be a popular genre, but I highly recommend it. Leonardo Dicaprio plays a Federal Marshall who must go inspect the disappearance of a mental hospital patient on Shutter Island, but as the story goes on, it is clear everything is not as it seems. This movie is best experienced when you give it your full attention because there are key details that are revealed throughout which change your perspective and make you question everything you thought you knew.

A more family-friendly suggestion would be to watch The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2. The first movie is a classic from our childhood that we all enjoyed. It is always worth rewatching such a well-made Disney movie. The second definitely lived up to the hype when it came out in theaters, and it avoided being another sequel that disappointed fans of the original. It is certainly worth another watch after watching the first Incredibles.

My last suggestion is one of my favorite movies of all time, Pulp Fiction. It is not a movie for the faint of heart as it is directed by Quentin Tarantino who is known for his vulgarity, violence, and sensitive subjects. I love the movie because it is the perfect mix of comedy, drama, and action. Tarantino is a master at writing scripts and creating scenes that are simply a work of film genius. It is one of the most quotable movies ever in my opinion and that is why I enjoy it so much. The plot itself is very creative especially considering that the scenes appear out of order and follow four different stories that are all intertwined into one. The movie can be rewatched a thousand times and will never get old because it is simply that unique and well made. I highly recommend that everyone watch it at least once in his life.
