Senior Jack Allen highlighted Friday’s pep assembly with a half-court shot that presumably earned an extra Spirit Day for the student body.

According to Max Timmer, who served on the planning committee for the assembly and did the half-court “countdown” for Allen, students will have the unscheduled Spirit Day, essentially a dress-down day, on Thursday, Jan. 18.

Organized by Student Government, the pep rally for winter sports featured a blessing of the athletes, musicians and academic teams; a dunk contest by basketball players; two routines by the Dance Team; a promotion of the upcoming musical; an appreciation of the maintenance staff; and the half-court opportunity for Allen.

When he sunk the shot, senior boys rushed the court and hoisted the lanky Allen to their shoulders.

New principal Patrick Browne also spoke during the pep assembly, urging students to follow the example of good sportsmanship and right choice he had seen demonstrated by the hockey team in their most recent game.  Evidently a Notre Dame player had been flattened by the opposing team, and Mr. Browne applauded the hockey players for choosing to retaliate with a win rather than anger or retaliation.
