The building blocks, LEGOS, have surprisingly remained popular since their creation in 1932.
Even with today’s technology, Legos are still common toys in all households. With the help of their popularity, an animated film titled, The Lego Movie, was released on February 7.
In the movie, “An ordinary Lego construction worker (Emmett), thought to be the prophesied ‘Special’, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stasis,” reads the movie summary on IMDb.
Emmett lives an ordinary life with a goal to just fit in every day. He plays by the rules instructed by the government and does not try to stand out in front of the crowd.
Emmett soon learns that being like everyone else is not always a good thing. With the help of his new friends Wlydstyle, Batman, Unikitty, and Vitruvius, Emmett discovers he is unique and can be different from everyone else.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the family comedy stars Will Ferrell, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, and Chris Pratt.
Will Ferrell first established his career on the hit show Saturday Night Live, and since then has starred in several family comedy movies like Kicking and Screaming. Don’t recognize the rest of the actors by name? Arnett is commonly known for his role as Devon Banks on 30 Rock. Elizabeth Banks starred in the 2008 movie hit Definitely, Maybe. Pratt currently plays Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation.
It is a great movie for all ages to enjoy. There are witty one-liners that will make everyone laugh. Scenes like Lego Batman switching identities to Bruce Wayne, and Emmett’s original and crazy invention ideas are entertaining to all.
“I was a Lego fanatic as a child and I thought it was a ton of fun! It definitely brought back some memories and it was surprisingly funny as well,” senior Ben Harpt said after he saw the movie with his little brother on Valentine’s Day.
The Lego Movie does follow the typical heroic plot where the average man completes difficult obstacles to save the day; however, there are several twists throughout the film that changes the audiences’ perspective. They think the movie will play out a certain way, but at the end the audience learns they are wrong.
As Emmett prepares for his day, in one of the beginning scenes, the entire city is singing the catchy tune “Everything is Awesome” by Tegan and Sara. This song will be stuck in your head for hours after the movie is over.
Many other well-known icons voice smaller characters in the film such as Dave Franco, Jonah Hill, Morgan Freeman, Channing Tatum, Liam Neeson, and Shaquille O’Neal.
As cheesy as it sounds, this film teaches young children that it is okay to be different. Being unique is what makes you special. Nobody else in the world is exactly like you. If you do not have your own thoughts or share who you truly are in the world, you will be missing out on many experiences.
This is one of the most important messages that the younger generation needs to hear, over and over again.
