The holiday season is about to be upon us and a perfect way to start it off is the weekend after Thanksgiving at the Meyer Theatre.

About 80 local dancers of all ages from Northeastern WI Dance Organization, and five professionals, three of whom grew up here in Green Bay, will perform the Nutcracker Ballet.

“The mission of the Northeastern Wisconsin Dance Organization, Inc. is to promote and support the art of dance through high quality, professional level productions, education and outreach to the Green Bay community,” said Angie Flanagan, teacher at the Green Bay School of Dance.

Students come from all schools, studios and ages to rehearse throughout the fall every weekend to put together the show.

I have been a dancer with NEWDO for the past 6 six years and even though it is very time consuming and the long rehearsals are sometimes painful, I love spending time with my friends and the feeling of performing on stage is like nothing else, especially with the professionals.

“Not many kids get to dance with professionals right in front of them, and if you get the opportunity to do that, I think that’s incredible,” said Fiona Joespehs, NEWDO dancer.

For all our dancers, this is the highlight of their year and a huge inspiration. Randi Osetek (the Sugar Plum Fairy), Mckenzie Van Oss (Elder Clara) and Taylor Ayotte (the Snow Queen and Lead Marzipan), all of whom have been or are professionals at the North Carolina Ballet Company, started at my home studio, the Green Bay School of Dance.

They will be joined by Yvengy Shaplako and Kiefer Curtis as the Nutcracker Prince and the Cavalier.

They will arrive the week before the show for tech week to begin collaborating with the local dancers. It is an intense week that requires a lot of focus for the younger dancers due to the limited time with the professionals.

The shows are filled with passionate talent and should not be missed. They begin on November 29 and end December 1. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketstar. Anyone is free to contact me about tickets at my school email.
