Never Shall I Forget

Hannah Fergus, Freshman, NDA

The following poem, written by freshman Hannah Fergus in imitation of Elie Wiesel’s poem in NIGHT, reminds all of us about the losses suffered due to the pandemic.

Never shall I forget the warm sand on the beach in Florida where I first heard the news.

Never shall I forget my phone dinging saying school was cancelled for two weeks.

Never shall I forget “two weeks to flatten the curve” and how laughable that became.

Never shall I forget finishing middle school over zoom, saying goodbye to my childhood friends for the last time over a computer.

Never shall I forget wearing masks and sitting socially distant six feet apart on the first day of high school.

Never shall I forget all the cancelled firsts like first dances and first football games.

Never shall I forget a year of my life being taken away.

Never.
