Sophomore Eamonn Ryan is making a name for himself on the rugby field, a sport not offered at NDA.
Ryan currently plays for the Green Bay Leprechauns and has already traveled across the country to places like Florida, Ohio and Utah, competing at a high level.
Ryan’s rugby journey began when he was in second grade. His coach performed a demonstration of the sport and from there, Ryan joined the flag team and continued to play throughout his life.
“It has a completely different pace and gameplay than any other sport,” Ryan said. “It also has an incredible community that is like no other sport.”
Ryan’s position on the field is called a Fly-Half. It is a combination of a football quarterback and basketball point guard. Fly-Halves control the offense and are the main distributors for the team. Additionally, they kick.
During the season, Ryan practices three times a week and competes in games every Friday.
Like any sport, rugby does not come without its challenges. One of the biggest challenges Ryan has faced is learning how to handle pressure while traveling to new places and competing with unfamiliar teammates.
However, Ryan has picked up a few skills while playing.
“I have learned great body control, decision making under pressure and leadership skills,” said the sophomore.
Moving forward, Ryan hopes to continue playing rugby until he can’t anymore. He is currently in the recruiting process.
He has had opportunities to play at high levels and has achieved great accomplishments, such as taking third in state last year as a freshman.
Even after he is unable to play the sport, Ryan hopes to stay close to the game by coaching.
“It has definitely shaped who I am as a person,” he said.
