For my CAS project, I will be running a book drive to support Friends of Brown County and the Brown County Central Library downtown.
The project will take place from April 13th to April 17th, and book donations can be dropped off at the school’s main entrance.
CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service.
The project is a requirement for me to receive the IB Diploma.
I was motivated by the idea of giving back to my community in a meaningful way.
Books have always played an important role in my life, and I have made good memories in the library.
For these reasons, organizing a book drive felt like a natural way to promote literacy and support access to resources that have helped me in the past.
The main goal is to get used to new books of any reading level.
Although I did have a clear vision of what I wanted the project to look like, organizing the project was a challenge.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was contacting people.
Reaching out to staff from the BCL was difficult because they would take very long to respond and gave very brief responses.
I began working on the project in January and hoped to run it in the same month, but due to miscommunication, it was pushed back to April.
Another challenge was trying to get it approved by the school.
The process to get a service project approved seems simple since it only requires the organizer to fill out a google form.
However, due to a lack of information about the project on my part, it was rejected the first time.
After having more information, such as the budget, contact information from the Friends of Brown County Library, and other small details, it was approved.
These difficulties have pushed me outside of my comfort zone and have helped me grow in communication and leadership.
Overall, this experience has been more than just completing a requirement or checking another box.
It has helped me grow as a person and shown me that the little things do matter.
I am excited to see the result of the book drive by April 17th and hope to receive many donations.
