Led by senior director Caroline Broberg, NDA’s spring play, Alice in Wonderland, was a buildup of many students’ hard work and a successful display of the whimsical world of Wonderland.
Broberg was inspired to take on the role of director after working with past NDA play/musical directors over the years. The production was a deeply collaborative experience.
“The scenes wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing team we had: Jess Lafond, Lina Statchura, and stage manager, Ngoclam Nguyen. They brought the real magic to the stage!” shared Broberg.
Like any other production, there were a few challenges that arose. Balancing the cast and crew’s time and other commitments with such a tight rehearsal schedule was difficult. Broberg handled this by approaching rehearsals with a positive attitude to make rehearsals engaging and enjoyable, ensuring that while work got done, it never felt overwhelming.
This production gave Broberg a new perspective on theater. Having previously performed on stage with a recent role in NDA’s musical, The Wizard of Oz, as the wicked witch of the west, she said directing a show allowed her to see the many moving parts that go into something like a production.
“My favorite behind-the-scenes moment was gathering all the costumes and seeing all the crazy combinations in the costume room,” said Broberg.
Despite the stormy weather on the days of the show, attendance stayed high, and the show was a success.
“I am so grateful for everyone who showed up despite the weather conditions,” she said.
Broberg expressed pride in the sense of community that has been built within the NDA musical program over the past two years. She credited the cast, crew, tech team, coordinators and supporters who made this production possible.
“I would like to thank the crew, tech and my amazing actors who brought the essence of Wonderland to the stage,” she shared.
After graduation, Broberg plans to attend Columbia College in Chicago to study acting and fashion design–and continue to pursue her passion for the arts.
