Two Notre Dame students and three faculty members were able to participate in Madison’s March for Life on April 28. Hundreds of people marched around the Capitol building advocating for the unborn.
“Even though it was a small group, that made it fun,” said Fr. Jordan Neeck, who chaperoned this NDA Lifeguard field trip. He admitted that the details of the march were vague, but everyone was excited to participate.
When the group arrived in Madison, there were crowds of people everywhere. Neeck explained that a large farmers’ market had just wrapped up, and the college’s Mifflin block party was still ongoing.
The event also hosted medical doctors, priests and attorneys to discuss the ethics of abortion. They clarified common misconceptions and explained the Catholic Church’s view of the topic.
The Superintendent of Catholic Schools attended the Madison March, and NDA was the only Catholic High school to make an appearance there.
The march itself went smoothly with the Capitol’s police watching over to ensure everyone’s safety. After the march, the group of students and staff toured the inside of the Capitol building.
It was a much smaller affair than Washington D.C.’s March for Life, and some may prefer the less crowded situation.
“I think a big problem is that we take such a national perspective, but it is locally that actually influences the decision-making,” Neeck explained. The students were able to understand how local involvement can have a significant influence.
The NDA Lifeguards host events throughout the school year, including the 40 Days for Life, the state march, the DC march and the recent diaper drive. Their cause is to defend all life.
