NDA will host its annual Cabaret Night on Thursday, March 26. It will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m.
The event is free to attend, and everyone is highly encouraged to enjoy this night dedicated to the fine arts.
“I always say the best night of first semester is the Academy Awards show, and the best night of second semester is Cabaret Night,” said veteran English teacher Carolyn Brown.
Cabaret Night is a long-standing tradition at NDA that has blossomed over time. The Drama Club had previously sponsored Cabaret Night until Assistant Principal Greg Mazarik asked Brown, Student Government adviser at the time, to take over.
She agreed on one condition: the event would be free for anyone to attend. The request was fulfilled, and attendance blossomed.
Now Director of Activities Jennie Laaksonen oversees the event in partnership with Mr. Steve Johnson, band director at NDA, whose musical groups provide continuous music in the Commons throughout the night.
In addlition, Ms. Tina Harpold, NDA’s art teacher, organizes the visual art portion of the night. This includes finding spots to display a variety of works, including sculptures, paintings and photography.
In essence, the school transforms into an art gallery, a concert, a comedy club, and a cinema, all for this spectacular night.
The commons is filled with the constant sound and commotion of musicians playing while numerous acts from singing to dancing to juggling will be ongoing in the library and auditorium.
The library will be closed for the whole school day on Thursday in preparation for the film festival, singing performances, and the juried show. All these events will take place in the library in the evening.
The final performances and big acts will take place on stage in the auditorium. A schedule of where performances will take place will be available during the event.
Another longstanding tradition is an evening meal. After all, the word “cabaret” means a cafe with entertainment. The menu has yet to be announced, but it is sure to impress.
Cabaret highlights the arts and performance within NDA. It will be a spectacular evening celebrating the creativity of students and staff. . . no one should miss it.
