ASTRA Centered Around Service, Spiritual Growth

Kylie Callaway, Staff Writer, Advanced Journalism

Among the many clubs at NDA is ASTRA. This club helps students obtain social justice hours while connecting with their community.

“ASTRA is the Notre Dame service club that meets monthly to discuss a variety of opportunities to help the community,” said Charlie DeRuyter.

They have a club mass once a month as well. You do not have to do every event that is posted for ASTRA. The leaders understand that you cannot make every event and love to see kids at events.

Club leaders are Faith Frelich and Kylie Callaway. Their advisor is Mr. Kreigl. ASTRA  is a way to help the community and those who are in need.

ASTRA is different from other clubs and has an atmosphere unlike any other, said Callaway.

“This club is different because we focus on enhancing the community with fun events,” added Caroline VanDrisse.

According to club members, their service acts for the community are something of a spiritual experience, helping “to heal our  wounds” or “fill a void in our  hearts and feel whole again.”

The club leaders emphasized everyone is welcome to join and “you can even do events with friends.”

“In my opinion, ASTRA is the most iconic club at NDA by far, as it stands for our values as a school community, though we have many great clubs here at NDA as well,” said DeRuyter.

Past service opportunities have included Altrusa House, Paul’s Pantry, Freedom House, ESL and 40 Days for Life. Members sort food, prepare meals, do yardwork and march to end abortion.

If you are interested in joining, come to the meeting on October 13 and find out if you might enjoy participating.

“We do this club to help our community and create an unbreakable link to God and his teachings,” explained VanDrisse.
