Senior Charlie Gerstner is making waves in the underground rap scene with the release of his album “ ##SPORADIC.”
The album marks Gerstner’s biggest project and showcases his diverse musical influences and ability to collaborate with a wide range of artists, all of which has been a different experience for him.
“I have always tried to bring new things to the table and reach into different bags when it comes to building my catalog,” said Gerstner.
He describes “##SPORADIC” as a two-part project. The first half features darker, harder production with more aggressive deliveries and lyrical content. In contrast, the second half is lyrically introspective, reflective and features more airy production.
“Common themes portrayed throughout the album are my relationship with God, my hardships and love,” Gerstner shared.
Bringing his vision to life was both a rewarding and a challenging experience, one that he approached with determination and the support of fellow creators.
One significant contributor was Marveygocrazy, a producer from Milwaukee, who has deep roots in the underground rap scene in the Twin Cities. Marvey produced two tracks on the album: the opening track “Destiny” (feat. yescairo) and the third track “Hab!t” (feat. Spiral Forever).
Spiral Forever, an artist from Maryland, and yescairo, a mutual friend of Marvey and Gerstner’s older brother, added their unique flair to the project.
That brother, Howie Gerstner, also known as how13.exe, made his mark on the album by being featured on track seven “bE StR0ng // 101” and having a hidden feature on Track 6, “Studio.”
NDA senior Joan Sebastian Garcia, otherwise known as Seb, is featured on track ten entitled “Make U Mine.”
“This song was made in two hours on a Sunday night after we completed our Historical Investigation peer reviews for IB History,” said Gerstner.
The last musical collaborator is Corey Lingo, one of the founders of the Pluggnb subgenre, a fusion of the airy plug rap scene and the vocals and soul of the r&b genre.
On the creative side, senior Max Bonkowski played an essential role in the visual aspects of the album. He helped shoot and edit the “Undeniable” music video, worked on the album cover, and contributed to the overall visual concept of the project.
“Without him, the album would have never been fully realized, and it wouldn’t give listeners the same perspectives that they have now about the project,” said Gerstner.
The response to “##SPORADIC” has exceeded Gerstner’s expectations.
“There has been a lot of love, support and interest shown for the album since its release,” he said.
Gerstner is scheduled to perform in Milwaukee on August 30 at 2 a.m. at 801 E Clarke St. alongside other underground rappers. He will be selling signed CDs of his album, and admission is free.
“Anyone who wants to pop out and see us perform is welcome,” he invited.
