Math teacher Megan Herbst and her high school sweetheart have been married only 2 and ½ years, but their relationship spans many more years than that.
They met in elementary school and started dating freshman year of high school.
“We were friends for a long time before we started dating, and I didn’t think much of him more than a friend until he started finding time to talk to me and spend time with me, and then I realized I did actually like him more than a friend,” said Herbst.
Mr. Herbst was a drummer, and Mrs. Herbst was a member of the color guard in their school’s marching band.
Their high school marching band was invited to march at Disney World, and he asked her out on New Year’s Eve during the fireworks.
Her mother-in-law, who was also her high school volleyball coach, was very supportive of their relationship.
“At the beginning of my freshmen year she found out her son was talking to me after a game and on the bus ride home. She called me out in front of the entire volleyball bus and told me that she had a feeling someday I would marry her son,” shared Herbst.
They have always done things together and were known for being the stereotypical high school sweethearts.
They dressed up as Mr. and Mrs. Incredible for homecoming and were elected homecoming king and queen. They have also done several couples costumes over the years and won a costume contest where they dressed as Russel and Kevin from the movie UP.
“In high school he played football, and I was on the poms team, and then we both went to UW-Stout where he played football, and I was a cheerleader,” said the math teacher.
During Mr. Herbst’s football career, Mrs. Herbst only missed two in all of his 8 years of playing.
Her favorite thing about her husband is his unwavering support, which she greatly appreciates.
He is there, she explained, to support her at musical performances, cheerleading competitions, races and anything else.
“I know that I have the space and ability to do whatever crazy idea I have because he will be there supporting me,” she said.
