Father Jordan is looking for NDA students in grades ten through twelve to join him on the annual service trip to Canton, Mississippi, during spring break.
The spring break trip runs March 2-8 and will cost $500 per student. This cost will cover transportation, food and two hotel stays, but the chaplain emphasized money is available if the $500 is a hardship.
“They have nothing, but they have everything because of their joy and happiness,” said Father Jordan when referring to the Canton residents.
On this trip, students help the people of Canton who live “in one of the poorest parts of the country,” in different ways. Last year, for example,, students built porches and did some gardening in the community garden.
This will be Father’s second service trip to Canton, but NDA students have been going there annually for 23 years.
Barbara Inciarte, who graduated last year, helped Spanish-speaking residents with documents, and Father Jordan said it would be an asset to have Spanish-speaking students on the trip.
While in Canton, a local Baptist church opens its doors for NDA students and staff to have a nice place to sleep. There is also a Catholic church close by where students attend daily mass and have prayer.
If you are interested, stop by Father Jordan’s room and pick up an application that will ask you three simple questions about your faith background, service background, and the reason you want to partake in the trip.
The goal is 15-20 students.
