Joe Hunt and Owen Schwarten are seniors who became semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Fewer than 1% of seniors nationwide qualify to be a semifinalist, which is an honor within itself.
“The scholarship’s main benefit is the recognition – it is a rare achievement that sets you apart,” said Schwarten.
The scholarship is $2,500 but there is potentially more if the student attends a college that sponsors the scholarship.
Schwarten explains that the process to advance from a semifinalist to finalist involves more than just test scores.
“You have to fill out an online application with basic info about yourself, as well as write an essay to be considered for the finalist position,” he said.
Many students spend a lot of time and money to prepare for the PSAT. However, Schwarten took an untraditional approach.
“Honestly, I did not prepare for the PSAT. I had seen questions from it before, though, and knew somewhat what to expect,” he admitted.
His straightforward approach also carries into his test-taking style.
“I don’t use any particular test-taking strategies. I stay focused and don’t think about time or progress,” he noted.
For juniors who might be anxious about taking the PSAT he offers some advice.
“Don’t overthink it. There are practice tests online to help you prepare, and you also get to use Desmos on the PSAT. Learn how to use Desmos well; it’s a cheat code,” he said.
He also shares one unconventional tip he used on both the PSAT and ACT.
“I got some Sweet Tart minis from the vending machine during the break. I can’t confirm this, but I think the boost of sugar helped,” he shared.
Reflecting on his achievement, Schwarten feels a sense of relief and fulfillment.
“Reaching semifinalist status was a goal of mine since freshman year., When I saw the kids who were semifinalists that year, I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to do that. That’s going to be me,’” he said.
Now that he has accomplished one of his goals, the next step is college, where his academic journey will continue.
