Although Notre Dame doesn’t have a traditional “Homecoming,” which hasn’t been the case for 28 years, Student Government still finds ways to give us the same experience while maybe adding a little extra.
De la Baie Fest, usually during Spring Week, had to be replaced this year due to the NFL Draft taking place right here in Green Bay next spring.
Student Government came up with Harvest Fest and scattering our week-long dress-up days all throughout the semester, which in my opinion, gives us something to look forward to all the way up to finals.
Harvest Fest was very similar to De la Baie Fest. Although there weren’t any 3-on-3 basketball games, the dodgeball tournament games were intense and engaging.
Now for the dance. It’s always what you make it. If you and your group of friends walk in there thinking, “I’m not going to have any fun,” then the answer is simple: you won’t have any fun.
As a senior, and this being my last Fall Fest dance, I was looking forward to having an amazing time with my friends, which I did. The songs were upbeat and songs that almost everyone knew or could at least dance to. The circles students make are always the best part. Some kids get in there and show off their talents, while others are just being funny and having a good time.
The students in Student Government decided they wanted to wait to open the gym until after the big “drop” or light show, which I think was a great idea. This way students got to be in the commons with their friends and see the lights before they went to play in the gym.
Advisers were surprised by the number of students in the gym. Dancing is not for everyone, and some kids just end up coming for the experience, and it’s something to do on a Saturday night.
Imagine the number of kids that would come if we hosted an open gym for a little while on a Saturday night, so they could shoot around or play volleyball in the gym. I think it would be a popular event.
Thank you to Student Government and their advisers for making Fall Fest a possibility. We look forward to what you guys have in store for us the rest of the year.
