The Academy Awards, formerly known as Mr. NDA, is one of the most beloved NDA traditions, taking place each December.
It is an event where juniors and seniors take the spotlight as contestants and showcase their talents to the school.
For underclassmen, there is still a way to become part of the event by being a rampateer.
Rampateers are paired with contestants to accompany them during their introductory walk on stage and can even assist in parts of their act.
Rampateers are selected through an online drawing during the morning announcements.
In 2023, I was one of the few lucky sophomores chosen as a rampateer and was paired with Charlie Gerstner.
I was both excited and nervous because I did not know Gerstner nor had I been a part of such a big event.
Before the show, there is a practice day where everyone involved in the event rehearses their stage cues, smooths out their acts and gets comfortable walking on stage.
After the practice, I had become more confident and less nervous about not knowing where to go.
Gerstner’s act was a unique rap he wrote himself, and I featured in it as a “judge” critiquing his rap.
Other contestants showcased their talents through dancing, singing or performing original skits.
Although rampateers are not required to be a part of the contestant’s act, many took the opportunity to be in them.
Being a rampateer was much easier than I initially thought, and it gave me an opportunity to connect with people and feel more involved in NDA.
The energy of the event, performances, and unexpected twists of the night made it memorable.
Reflecting on the experience, I realize how much being a rapmateer added to my school year.
The excitement of the event, the connections I made with others, and the opportunity to support my peers made it one of my most memorable experiences from high school so far.
For any freshman or sophomore thinking about entering, I would say it is probably one of the best things you can do.
The Academy Awards is an incredible event to be a part of, and you never know if you might be one of the few who are chosen.
