Here at Notre Dame, we are surrounded by incredible people who accomplish some incredible things, and athletics are no different.
We are in a golden era in Notre Dame sports with multiple teams and athletes competing at extremely high levels.
We just finished a four-year run with our girls basketball team that will more than likely never be duplicated again.
Over four years, they won 114 games and only lost five and won three state championships while finishing runner-up the fourth year.
As a broadcaster, when I walk into the gym to call a game and see one half of the room completely empty, it ruins the excitement of being there.
Girls basketball isn’t the only sport where I see a lack of attendance from the NDA community. I can point out multiple instances where this happens.
Last year at a home playoff football game, our fans were outnumbered by the opposition by at least double. Indeed, this happened last Friday night when we played Port Washington.
Athletics are part of what makes this school so amazing because it adds an extra sense of community to our building when one of our teams is playing that night, and the entire building claims they can not wait to be there to watch it, and yet no one shows up.
I have spoken with a number of people about this, including my grandfather who graduated from Premontre back in the day, and he is extremely disappointed in the minimal fan section at all events, not just sports.
My grandfather told me, “When I was in high school, there was no question what you were doing on a Friday night. You were going to the football game, or basketball game, or the musical performance that night. That’s just what you did.”
Consider this a challenge to any and all supporters of any event that happens at NDA, sports or arts, to attend as many events in person at NDA as possible.
