The Triton girls’ basketball season opens Thursday just like it has for the last three years.
Dating back to the 2021-2022 season, the Tritons have played the Pewaukee Pirates for the season opener and the season finale, the state championship every year.
So, once again, the Tritons will start the season on Thursday in Pewaukee at 7 p.m.
The Tritons defeated the Pirates in the 2022 and 2023 state championship games before falling 52-60 in this past year’s Division Two championship.
Due to the recent success of these two teams and the WIAA’s new competitive balance system, both of these teams will now be competing in Division One.
After last season, the Tritons had to say goodbye to five seniors who left a legacy on this Notre Dame program. This year’s team is looking to fill their shoes.
“We return two starters and several other varsity kids, but they are all stepping into new roles this year and will be asked to do a lot more,” explained Head Coach Sara Rohde. “I think our players want to prove that regardless of those changes, we will be a top team in the state.”
Coach Rohde really liked the hustle she saw from her team last weekend in their scrimmages, but she is looking for more communication on the court on Thursday and more offensive reps for the team.
Pewaukee is bringing back most of its team, including three Big 10 commits in Amy and Anna Terrian and Giselle Janowski.
“We know they are going to score, but we just need to figure out how to respond and answer back every time,” explained senior Kendall Ronsman.
The still talented Tritons’ team will be looking to “prove it” this year, as their motto says.
“There is also a lot of talk that we are not going to be good this year,” said senior Peyton Musial. “Every time we step on the court, we are going to use our motto to prove that we are still a good and competitive team that should not be underlooked.”
Musial continued, “This game will be good for us to see where we are at and what we need to work on. I am excited just to step on the court and be able to play a game again.”
“Pewaukee is very good. We know we will have to play well to compete with them, said Coach Rohde. “We will see what we are made of.”
The team’s home opener is on December 16 vs Sheboygan South at 5:45 p.m.
