“Doing the Career Compass has been such a good opportunity for me,” said Cassi Garrison. The new Career Compass issue focuses on the career exploration program and is written and edited by Garrison, a senior at NDA.
Garrison started this project through her Personal Professional Skills class, an NDA program now in its third year. She is collaborating with Mr. Christian Dory, teacher of the PPS class, on the production of Career Compass.
The goal of the paper is to update students and teachers on the career exploration class and give insight from professionals at NDA.
The first issue was released to staff earlier this month, and Garrison plans to release a new issue every two months.
It’s Garrison’s first time doing a project like this, but so far she has received positive feedback on her design and writing skills.
“Working with the layout, there were some issues with the margins,” Cassi said about her challenges with the project.
Her love for writing originated from taking Journalism I at NDA, which pushed her to be a part of Advanced Journalism for the past three years where she was writing stories for the Online Tritonian.
“I thought about it (journalism) for a career,” said the senior.
Through her PPS class Garrison hopes to start an internship at the Press Times newspaper next semester.
In the future, she dreams of going to UW-Madison for pre-law and then law school to become an environmental lawyer.
Her passion for the environment came from her interest in her mother’s job, which involves water cleaning.
Garrison is currently in her last year of high school and is enrolled in three IB classes, English, philosophy, and PPS.
She also encourages underclassmen to try new things in high school and mentioned her personal growth due to all the new opportunities she’s taken advantage of.
