“Boxing has impacted my life in a positive way,” shared NDA senior Arisandy Borquez.
Borquez has been boxing since she was six or seven years old.
“I started boxing because my brother started doing it. My dad didn’t want me to do a sport like volleyball or basketball. He wanted me to do boxing because not every girl is interested in it because it’s a ‘boy’ sport,” she said.
Borquez and her family used to own a boxing gym called Juniors Boxing Club.
She explained that her dad and brother are her trainers. She sometimes goes to a gym for training, or she trains in her basement.
“I compete in different places. We sometimes travel to Chicago or Milwaukee. We’ve even been to L.A for competitions,” said Borquez.
She explained how she has learned so much from boxing. “I’ve learned how to defend myself and all the different types of punches and stands. It’s impacted my life in a way that it’s taught me discipline. It made me mentally and physically stronger. It boosts my confidence.”
Borquez plans to continue boxing as a hobby after high school.
