Tritons Defeat Fox Valley Lutheran to Advance in Playoffs
October 19, 2018
The blitzers might have been the difference in the latest Triton win, a 35-17 playoff victory over Appleton’s Fox Valley Lutheran. Until Mitch Chosa and Nick Koehler started getting in on the Foxes’ quarterback, the visitors were in the game and challenging the #2 seeded Tritons for the win.
FVL drew first blood, going up 3-0 with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. Notre Dame’s Wes Glime responded with a long bomb to Tommy Martzahl that got NDA to the Foxes’ 12-yard line but left Martzahl injured and carted off the field. A 12-yard pass to Josh Cribben put the Tritons up 7-3.
More passes from Glime, hard runs by Brandon Limoni, great catches by Cribben, Aaron Ronsman and Will Sullivan gave the Tritons a 21-10 lead at halftime.
After a ferocious facial hit on Ben Smet that had Head Coach Mike Rader ranting at the refs, FVL scored on a 60-yard swing pass early in the second half to narrow the score to 21-17. At the end of the third, that was still the score.
Then, with third and eleven, Glime connected with Sullivan to the FVL 26. A scrambling Glime put the Tritons on the FVL 13-yard line. Two offsides by FVL led to confusion at the goal line, but Glime threw a screen pass to Limoni with 7:45 left in the game. 28-17 Tritons.
The Foxes fight back–but to no avail. NDA takes over at its 33-yard line and punches the visitors with Limoni runs. Finally, with five minutes left in the game Glime connects with Cribben to score again– 35-17 Tritons.
Then Koehler sacked the FVL quarterback with 3:09 left to give the Tritons the ball and seal the win.
