NDA’s Winter Dance is scheduled for February 8 in the school common. This semi-formal dance does not require a date.
Previously known as the Sweethearts Switch Dance, it has recently undergone a name and concept change. Although it is no longer advertised as the Sweethearts Dance, after eight years NDA community members still often refer to it by the old name and participate in old traditions.
In years past this dance was a switch dance where the girls would ask the guys instead of the traditional way.
The switch occurred because Frau Laaksonen, lead adviser of Student Government, found that students believed in order to attend the dance they must have a date. To make the dance more inclusive, it was rebranded the Winter Dance.
Students find that this dance, though not as formal as the Fall Fest Dance, is a fun way to get the NDA community together.
“I like the Winter Dance because it comes during the time when Christmas break is over, and it’s not quite spring break yet,” said junior Addyson Simpson about her feelings towards the upcoming dance.
Another junior, Jaedyn Mueller, noted how the Sweethearts’ traditions have carried on for so long.
“I think it’s fun how even though the dance has changed, the concepts are still apparent. The pinks and reds, girls asking guys–I think it’s really cool.”
Other than the date details of the Winter Dance have not been released yet. No doubt it will be like previous dances with fun music and an overall good atmosphere.
“Dances at NDA are typically fun, and I’m looking forward to making more good memories at the next one,” said sophomore Secora Collins about her excitement for the Winter Dance.
