“I’ve never played a sport. I’m the most uncoordinated individual,” said Nicky Hunter. Surprisingly Mrs. Hunter is the assistant athletic director at NDA. She’s worked here since June this year but her roots run deeper.
She has two sons, one of whom is a junior at NDA while the older son recently graduated from here.
She was born and raised in Wisconsin where she attended Preble High School and met her husband. They’ve been married for 23 years now.
After high school, she went to UWGB to get a music-focused degree.
“My passion was music, so I went to college for music, … It was my passion. It came very easy to me,” said Mrs. Hunter. Her career led her to perform as a backup singer for Kenny Rogers and Roberta Flack.
Now she sings for her church during funerals and weddings.
Her love of sports came from her job at the YMCA where she applied after some financial struggles with becoming a stay-at-home mom. She originally wanted to work there for the free swim lessons for her two sons.
“It has been great for my family, and I’m very grateful for the YMCA,” said Mrs. Hunter. She continues to work there part-time to this day. She used to teach stroller aerobics but is now a personal trainer.
“We became total gym rats,” said Hunter. After working there for years she holds important roles such as healthy living lead and first responder in the building.
As a result of this athletics-focused job, she discovered her love for biking and now explains she has more bikes than cars.
Mrs. Hunter often goes on 100-mile bike rides on her free Saturdays. Just recently she biked 40 miles from Green Bay to Sturgeon Bay.
She has done eight triathlons and 15 half-marathons so far.
“The challenge is for me personally to be away from my home as much as I’ve had,” said the assistant athletic director. Her sons are her pride and joy, and she enjoys their moments in the spotlight.
Mrs. Hunter hopes to connect more with students and invites anyone and everyone to come into her office at any time to grab some candy or tell her about their day.
