It is no secret that the Notre Dame Boys’ Hockey team is in the middle of a golden stretch in their sport. They have won the last two state championships and are currently skating their way through the FRCC with an undefeated record.
“We have grown a lot throughout the season, especially as teammates,” said Thomas Wroblewski, a freshman on this year’s team. “We have a lot of freshmen, which means a lot of new people in different spots, and the juniors and seniors really make it feel like everyone belongs no matter what.”
Wroblewski has had quite the season with twelve goals and twelve assists going into the conference tournament.
One of the keys to this team’s success has been their speed, which Wroblewski describes as “not a lot of structure and a lot of organized chaos.”
This is the second full season for Head Coach Mike Szkodzinski, and he is keeping the intensity and focus of his players at an all-time high.
“He never lets you take a day or even a drill off. He’s always on you to make us the best we can be,” said Wroblewski.
The team is looking to continue a string of dominance in the FRCC Tournament which begins on Thursday night with a semi-final showdown with the Ashwaubenon Jaguars.
Wroblewski stated that the chemistry with this team is “good, but needs to be extra heading into the playoffs.”
The team is looking to make it back to state once again where they have the potential to make history by winning a third consecutive championship.
“There is for sure a lot of pressure. If we don’t do well this year, then everyone starts to criticize, but that’s a given when you come to a program like this,” Wroblewski concluded.
There is an old adage in sports: the standard is the standard. And the standard for the boys hockey team is championship or bust. That journey will continue with the opening round of the FRCC tournament against the Jags.
