NDA musical’s cast and pit orchestra for the production Annie aren’t the only ones who have been working hard recently.
The stage and set crew have also been working on preparing the props and sets and rehearsing their setup.
“The main difference between set crew and stage crew is the activities. The stage crew is in charge of moving the props on stage during performances and doing hair and makeup for the actors. Meanwhile, the set crew gets to build and paint the props. Think of it as the behind-the-scenes behind-the-scenes,” explained sophomore Angelina Stachura.
“Stage (and set) crew is a vital part of any musical production. The show does not run without them, and they are crucial to have the show run smoothly,” said Mrs. Andrea Gilson, NDA’s musical director.
Senior Amanda Hofacker and sophomore Irene Ertman were chosen to lead the crew and “manage the stage.”
“I was chosen by Mrs. Gilson to be the backstage manager last year and then again this year. I think I was chosen because she saw potential, and she knows my strong commitment to everything I do,” said Hofacker.
“My role as a leader is to help guide classmates and younger students in the behind-the-scenes aspect of the musical. I help them know when their scene is coming up, or I give them the props they need,” she added.
Irene Ertman is the assistant backstage manager.
Aside from the leader role, there are some other roles involved within the stage crew.
Junior Madison Malo is in charge of Ben the dog who is playing Sandy in the musical. “I take him on stage and keep him calm until his cue. Then I take him back off the stage when his part is over,” she said.
“Stage crew is a lot of fun but it is a lot of commitment. You have to be prepared, adjustable and committed to making all the rehearsals. However, I would say to do it!” shared Junior Ava Parker.
Currently, the crew attends rehearsals after school Monday through Thursday from 3:30 pm-6:30 pm.
“Being a part of the musical is a great experience. Seeing the finished product on opening night is super rewarding,” said Ertman.
In stage crew, you spend a lot of time together talking and getting to know each other Also creating unique friendships between all grades,” said Malo.
“I regret not getting involved sooner, and I will be getting involved again in the future. I hope to also be in the set crew for the spring play since it’s been such an amazing experience to help with the musical production,” added Stachura.
In regard to future musicals and plays, Gilson said, “If anyone is interested in stage crew, they should attend the mandatory informational meetings and attend the mandatory practices. We have had so many students interested in stage crew for the past two years. We take students who are committed with their time and demonstrate dedication towards the production. I encourage all students to be a part of the musical production.”
