Junior Gracie Grzesk recently committed to play basketball at UW-Madison. The Online Tritonian asked her about her decision and her outlook on this season at NDA.

What is your favorite thing about playing basketball?

My favorite thing about basketball is being able to compete against high level players, meeting some of my best friends and making lifelong memories.

What other schools were you considering?

My top eight schools were Green Bay, Wisconsin, Drake, Northwestern, Butler, Toledo, Illinois State and Belmont.

Why specifically did you choose Madison?

I chose Madison for the dynamic of the team and the welcoming coaching staff. Madison has great academics and is close to home, which was a big factor for me. The campus is beautiful and the Big Ten is a very competitive conference for women’s basketball.

How long have you been playing basketball?

 Since 3rd grade.

Do you play any other sports?

No, I recently decided not to play volleyball to concentrate on basketball. I used to play soccer and softball when I was younger as well.

Outside of NDA basketball do you play/train somewhere else?

In the spring and summer I play for Purple Aces AAU program. I’ve been playing with them since 3rd grade. Most of July I am gone playing on the road with my AAU team.

Are you nervous about playing at such a high level and in front of so many people?

No, Coach Sara and my AAU team have prepared me to play against the highest competition in the country/state. I am excited to play at such a high level.

How are you feeling about going into your NDA season being back-to-back state champions?

I am super excited for this upcoming season. I feel very fortunate to have won two state championships in my first two years here at NDA. We need to focus on taking this season one game at a time and improving everyday in practice.

What obstacles will you face being the defending champions?

The target is on our back this year. We know that every team will give us their best game because of our past success and history.

What are you most excited for with playing basketball at the collegiate level?

I am excited for the challenge of playing for Wisconsin in the Big Ten and helping build a successful program there that can hopefully play in the NCAA tournament. I am ecstatic to be able to represent my state university.
