NDA’s The Little Mermaid opened January 19 with four more performances planned for the weekend.. The Tritonian interviewed senior Emily Hoeppner–the lead actress in this year’s musical.

Hoeppner has been involved in musicals every year of high school, and even performs in musicals outside of Notre Dame.

Q: What has been your favorite part of being involved in musicals?

A: My favorite part would have to be the family-like atmosphere that is created over time. I love the group of people that I get to work with because they are all so hard-working, and it is inspiring to be working with them.

Q: What is your favorite song from The Little Mermaid? What is your favorite scene to act in? Why?

A: I would say my favorite song in the show would be “Part of Your World.” It is just a classic, and I have been singing it since the 3rd grade. As far as acting, I love any scene I get to be with Sebastian. It is fun to bounce off each other.

Q: What was your favorite NDA musical you’ve performed in?

A: I don’t think I would be able to choose a favorite. I love them all for different reasons

Q: How did it feel to be cast as the lead role for this year’s production?

A: It was a true honor to be cast as a lead role; it felt rewarding that all the hard work has paid off.

Q: If you could act as any other character in the show other than Ariel, which character would you want to be?

A: I would have to say Ursula because she is so evil, and I think it would be a lot of fun to goof around as her.

Q: Are you planning on pursuing theater as a career?

A: Yes! I am hoping to earn a BFA in Musical Theater and perform for the rest of my life!

Q: What advice would you give for anyone wanting to get into acting?

A: I would say don’t be afraid to be yourself and to just have fun because at the end of the day that is all that matters. Also, know that you are good enough. If you love what you are doing, do it, go for it and don’t give up!
