Due to their tough effort and intense participation–not to mention the speed of Danika Apple–seniors won this year’s powder puff tournament Monday night at Ted Frisch Field.
The annual powder puff tournament consists of all four classes competing in three bracket-style flag football games.
The bracket was set up so the freshmen played the juniors, and the seniors played the sophomores. Then, the seniors played the freshmen and the sophomores played the juniors.
The seniors and the juniors had the best records, so they faced each other in the championship leading to the seniors getting the trophy and bragging rights.
The seniors were coached by Brady Laviolette, Leo Dart and Brayden Davis. Their staff coach was Eliza Campbell.
This was the seniors second year in a row winning the tournament.
The championship score was 21-14. The tournament was commissioned by football player Micah Marzec.
Usually, there is a game for the two classes with the worst records who play each other for 3rd place. Since the tournament went so late, Frau did not allow that losers’ game. The tradition is that the championship game should be the only game held on the field.
Sophomore Destiny Webster said, “Scoring a touchdown in powder puff gave me a taste of what playing real football in the Friday night lights would be like.”
“It’s an experience I think all high school girls should get to have,” said junior Kendall Ronsman about the games.
“It is very exciting to watch the enthusiasm of the girls, it is something that you can’t miss,” said freshman coach Quinn Blom when asked about his coaching experience.
Powder puff could be frowned upon as well. In the past girls have gotten hurt. Some girls could also take the games too seriously.
Every year powder puff, organized by Student Government advisers, is one of the highlights of Fall Fest Week.
