Timmer Recommends Three as Must-See Movies

Maxwell Timmer, Staff Writer, Advanced Journalism

The Academy Awards, or as some call it, The Oscars, concluded almost two weeks ago. With many movies seeing success during the award season, here are the three must-see movies that were nominated for awards.

1. Parasite

This Korean film that won Best Picture at The Oscars is a social satire set in Korea. Parasite shows the story of a wealthy family and a poor family that is conning them into giving them money. It received Best Director award and Best Original Screenplay. This movie, while spoken in Korean and subtitled in English, keeps you on the edge of your seat in this satire of the social classes–and has a shocking ending.

2. Jojo Rabbit

With commanding performances by Scarlett Johansson and Taika Waititi, this satirical movie shows the reality of the Hitler-youth in a humorous and ironic spoof. While Taika Waititi’s depiction of Hitler is entertaining, the outstanding writing and plot makes for a memorable cinematic experience that hits hard at the end.

3. Marriage Story

This film, that shows the marriage of two young actors and writers falling apart, is one of the best this film season. With yet another dominant performance by Scarlett Johansson, the cast of Adam Driver, Laura Dern (who won Best Supporting Actress) and Ray Liotta bring a compelling story to life with their acting abilities. It’s a big win for the streaming service, Netflix, who finally showed that regardless of box office success they can command respect on the big stage. This film shows the truth behind divorce and is a must-see for movie watchers.

All three of these films were nominated multiple times, including all three being nominated for Best Picture. These three films dominated the movie season and are a must-see for this year’s films.
