Over 60 families attended NDA College Night February 2.
“I was delighted to see students in attendance, juniors and even some sophomores,” said College Counselor Becky Bain.
Two guest speakers led the night with insightful insider knowledge.
Chuck Erickson is a private college counselor with over 25 years of experience in college admissions. He also runs a YouTube channel dedicated to informational videos about college.
Eric Wagner, the Director of Admissions at St. Norbert College, was the other speaker.
“He has been a college admissions professional for several decades and is always fun to listen to,” Bain added.
The duo conducted the night, covering topics such as essay topics, recommendation letters, scholarships and how to stand out in admissions.
Two helpful pieces of advice they gave were to take the ACT at least twice and to tour a college before making your final decision.
College Night is organized specifically for junior students and parents to understand the college admissions process, and experts will offer guidance on how to impress colleges with the application.
“If juniors go into the summer knowing nothing about the college application process, they are usually lost when senior year hits,” said Bain. She planned College Night for the last twelve years to assist students.
Bain is consistently improving College Night to benefit NDA families. Her next big step is to have the night recorded.
“We recorded College Night several years ago, but it was expensive and had poor sound quality,” she explained.
The details needed to plan College Night are enough to make anyone’s head spin. Bain secures guest speakers, involves volunteers, creates a presentation and finds a date that does not conflict with after-school hours.
“Miss Rockwood assembles over 200 College Counseling folders! I am grateful to all who help make this night a success,” said Bain.
Bain strives to make College Night accessible to everyone and an informational outlet for all those curious about the next steps after high school.
