The National Honor Society hosts Books and Bagels every year at Notre Dame Academy.
This year’s version of the event will be on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to prepare for finals.
All students are invited to enjoy a bagel while studying with friends, and there will be teachers and NHS members available to provide academic support. No prior registration is needed to go.
Fifty to one hundred people originally attended Books and Bagels, but post-covid attendance dropped for a few years. Attendance has been getting better, and last December the attendance was close to 100 students.
In past years teachers who have helped at the study tables were Mrs. Gretzinger, Ms. Cinotto, Mr. Stary, Sra. Stover, Mr. Guyette, Mr. Rudar, Mr. Geiser, Mrs. Gernondale and Mrs. Anderson.
NHS members will also be there to tutor and help students that need help.
Shaun Huss, NHS member who tutored last year, said he helps students with all subjects, but math and science are the subjects that he helps with the most.
“The best part about Books and Bagels is that it has a very positive atmosphere to get quality studying done,” said Huss.
He believes this helps the students by putting them in an environment that gives them all the resources they need to study successfully.
Another NHS student that will be there is Kate Van Pay, who started tutoring during her junior year when she joined NHS.
She is open to helping students with all subjects, but her main focuses are on math and Spanish.
“The best part about books and bagels is the collaboration between students and teachers. It is always inspiring to see,” said Van Pay
She believes this helps students by providing a safe area for students to talk about their studies and ways of improvement before finals.
