Ms. Joan Cinotto, teacher: “ I served at Sleep in Heavenly Peace and learned more about how we can work to give all children basic human needs such as bedding. It was a very fulfilling experience and awesome to watch all of the students work for the organization.”
Vanessa McCallum, freshman: My service site was Expectionary Equestrian, and I felt warmth in my heart as they looked grateful and appreciative for our service, especially when they never have time to clean their building. I cleaned their windows for them, inside and out, and got many thanks and compliments. Although I had breathing issues later on, I was happy I volunteered there.”
Caroline Broberg, junior: “My NDA service experience could be summarized in one word, community. It felt so great to get involved in my community with members of my own. My group went to Woodside senior communities and it felt amazing to see all the residents and clean up the complex for them.”
Quinn Klika, freshman: “I went to Resurrection, my old middle school. We were outside pulling weeds and picking up sticks and garbage. I really enjoyed talking to our chaperone and learning how she knew and taught my parents. I was also able to talk with her about cross country and how great it is because her kids went through the program.”
Paige Gilson, freshman: “ I stayed at Notre Dame and worked in the costume room. A bunch of friends and I organized different articles of clothing and brought old clothes to the dumpster. We went through every piece of clothing and either threw it out or put it on a labeled rack. It was fun to do with friends I knew and also to make new friends.”
Alex Vu, freshman: “Yesterday I went to St. Willebrord Parish from 9-12. We had lots of fun since almost everyone knew each other. We mopped the church, wiped pews, scraped gum from under the pews and picked up trash from around the church.”
Thomas Wroblewski, freshman: “ I went to a neighborhood across the street from the park. We planted 20 trees and then went to the park to pick up trash. I had mixed feelings about it because many people didn’t like that we were doing it, but a couple of people did like it.”
Jack Thomson, freshman: “I went to Saint Mary’s Church and we helped clean and move furniture around. We washed down the pews and also tested markers and sharpened pencils. They were so happy that we got to do some work for them and we got donuts after.”
Daniel Sanchez-Guzman, freshman: “I went to the Diocese of Green Bay and we went into the chapel in Bishop Ricken’s house which was super cool. We raked and cleaned the premises then took a break, and we all talked as well as enjoying cookies and chips. I think the experience was amazing in a way since it was really beautiful outside.”
Raymond Lawrence, freshman: “I went to Central Brown County Library, and it was lots of dusting of books and shelves. Everything was covered with dust, including the volunteers by the end. We found some strange books while dusting, including self-help books by John Cena and Kermit the Frog.”
Eamonn Ryan, freshman: “ I went to Resurrection Parish. I went there because I went to middle school there. We picked up sticks and raked all across the campus. We played basketball and after that we were released. I enjoyed planting the grass the most.”
Josh Afshar, freshman: “I went to the St. Norbert’s Abbey to clean up the outdoor area. I picked up the beautiful courtyard because there were hundreds of pine cones on the ground. We picked up sticks around the yard also. Overall it was a good time.”
Max Derouin, freshman: “I went here at NDA. We cleaned out closets in the basement and threw away junk.”
Abby Albrecht, freshman: “I went to Holy Cross, and we just did random yard work and then helped pre-schoolers work on their card for Mother’s Day. It was a good experience but kind of boring.”
Violet Lund, freshman: “I went to the costume room at NDA. We threw away clothes and stored them. It was very fun to look at all the old clothes. It was also gross because there was lots of mold and old stains.”
Lucy DeGroot, freshman: “I went to Sleep in Heavenly Peace. I did not enjoy it because we had to sand wood blocks and the wood sand got all over my clothes, hair, and in my eyes. It was also extremely loud and just not a very fun experience.”
Benjamin Sepulveda, freshman: “I went to St. Peter Church. I did yard work and picked up trash outside. I was with friends, so it was a fun day.”
Kara Hudson, freshman: “I went to NDA for service day and helped in the costume closest. It was in the basement and very humid. We sorted the costumes and boxes, and then we picked out the costumes and chose which were old. Some dresses were so old they could stand up by themselves.”
Maisie Hinz, freshman: “I went to the National Railroad Museum. There we cleaned event chairs, washed kid toys and picked up garbage. I had lots of fun talking with my group and riding a train. Mrs. Moulton was a great supervisor, and she got us all souvenirs.”
Ameila Butz, sophomore: “ I served at Literacy Green Bay, and it was an eye-opening experience to see how easy and simple it can be to help those around us.”
Audrey Zaruba, sophomore: “I served at Martin Elementary, helping out in the art room. It was a fulfilling experience to help the younger kids and see their creative growth.”
Hattie Compton, sophomore: “I served at the National Railroad Museum. We helped clean and did some yard work. I gained a lot from NDA Serves but mainly the feeling of happiness. Everyone was so thankful, and they were less stressed about the workload.”
Ahnika Adamski, junior: “I served at the Our Lady of Champion National Shrine. I got a whole new insight on the church.”
Lily Gretzinger, sophomore: “I served at Encompass Bellin, and I learned a lot about the childcare practices of our community.”
Ella Gelb, senior: “ I served at St. Vincent de Paul’s, weeding out items from the floor that had been out for a while to make room for new donations. I learned how generous people are to donate perfectly good items for other people to purchase, as well as how much a seemingly simple act of service is appreciated.”
Zoe Holubar, senior: “I served at Sleep in Heavenly Peace. I helped build certain parts of the beds. I realized the importance it is for children 3 and older to have a comfortable bed, and the community Sleep in Heavenly Peace provides.”
Julia Gutowski, freshman: “For NDA Serves I went to the Brown County Mental Health. For half the time we worked with elderly people that couldn’t function on their own. We played fun card games. You realize working with people with mental issues that they comprehend more than you think. I was playing Texas Hold’em, and many didn’t understand, but one lady said she didn’t understand, but she knew how to play.”
Tyler Sudzinski, freshman: “I went to Old St. Joe’s on St Norbert campus. I learned how to garden and plant. We planted trees and bushes and also shredded mulch.”
Sasha Euceda, freshman: “ I served at Saint Joseph School, my elementary/ middle school. We did lots of things around my school and spent time with the kids. It felt good going back and seeing people who watched me grow up, even though I liked where I am better now.”
Rhys Martin, freshman: “I helped organize the NDA costume room. It was pretty fun to organize and clean everything. When we finished, we helped the people baking frost their treats.”
Ruth Martinez, freshman: “I served at Boys and Girls Club. where they made me pull weeds and pick up garbage and moulding plants. This act of service taught me that I’m great at making plants look good.”
Rosie Muller, freshman: “I went to Brown County Mental Health. We ran carnival games in a rec area and then did some weeding in the front. It was fun to hang out with the people there, and have more empathy and understanding for people in a nursing home.”
Hayleigh Cornwell, freshman: “ I served at Saint Joseph School which was my preschool, elementary and middle school. I learned how much kids that go there love me. I also work there for the aftercare program and will be the 3k-aide for the last two weeks of the year.”
Max Janick, sophomore: “I went to Paul’s Pantry. I formed a strengthened bond with my friends and an increased fervor for helping others.”
Allie Hera, sophomore: “I went to the YMCA. We helped clean the place to exercise and workout. Along with helping out, the workers made their job a bit easier.”
Jason Anger, staff: “I served at the New Community Shelter. It showed me how good-hearted the NDA students are. I heard multiple conversations about previous service experiences they had, and their willingness and optimism about helping was great to see.”
