When you start high school, it feels like there are so many after-school events with such little information. If you are interested in something school related but you’re not even sure what it entails, please give this a read.
One of our most popular NDA events is the Academy Awards. When I was a freshman, I did not go to the Academy Awards because I didn’t understand what it was, and I assumed it wasn’t for me. I went my sophomore year and realized how much I had missed out on! In simple terms, the Academy Awards is like a talent show. Juniors and seniors dance, sing, make jokes, do skits and so much more. There is a little something for everybody. It’s super entertaining and I don’t see any reason why someone wouldn’t want to attend.
Fall Fest/ De La Baie Fest is always fun and often overlooked. A lot of students see this as time to skip school and go home for the day, but this isn’t something you want to miss. The festival, whether it’s in spring or fall, always has arts and crafts, food, games, music, and usually a big finale to end the night. Forget about that extra hour of studying and let loose, relieve stress, and, most importantly, have fun.
I never hear people talk about Phone-a-thon despite its being NDA’s second biggest fundraiser. It usually happens in the fall, and essentially, you get to eat pizza, hang out with friends, and help lower Notre Dame Academy’s school tuition fund. Even if you think you aren’t good at talking to people, give it a try and you might find a new passion. You get to call parents, alumni, and people who have ties to our school and ask for donations. Don’t worry about speaking on the spot because you get a script, and this also counts for service hours if you’re looking for a fun and helpful way to hit that goal.
Lastly, I want to recommend Cabaret Night. This is for the students who love the arts. Like the Academy Awards, this is a chance to showcase your talents whether they’re singing, drawing, playing an instrument, or even making a short movie. You can submit any art you want to be evaluated by mystery judges or perform in front of a crowd. You can also come to appreciate everyone else’s work and dedication. Show support to your fellow students and give one of your hidden talents a chance at Cabaret.
Obviously this isn’t everything that goes on after school but these are some events that I highly recommend. My final message to any freshman is to join those clubs you aren’t sure about, try out for that sport, and please listen to your teachers when they recommend an after-school function.
