The Trap Team at NDA, started in the spring of 2017, has grown into a very large community.
This year, the team has 31 members, including 20 athletes returning from last year’s team. After the 15 seniors on the team graduated last year, the team is welcoming a lot of new faces.
The team practices every Monday night at the New Franken Sportsmen’s Club. The trap season is nine weeks long and is broken down into two weeks of practice, five weeks of competition, one reserve week, and a final Family Fun Night.
“During this celebratory last event, relatives are invited to shoot alongside the athletes, culminating in a spirited Annie Oakley-style shootout to crown a single winner,” explained Coaches Tom and Cindy Sullivan.
Every session includes the athletes shooting two rounds of 25 clay targets. The club is open to all students, meaning no prior shooting experience is required.
All participants must complete a safety certification through either the USA Clay Target League or a certified Hunter’s Safety course, along with going to a mandatory range safety day to learn the proper handling and procedures.
Another opportunity the NDA Trap Team gives is the chance for students to earn a varsity letter. To qualify, an athlete must average a score of 19 or higher per round.
Another big highlight of the season is the Wisconsin State High School Trap Tournament held in June at the shooting complex in Rome, Wisconsin. With over 100 schools and 1,900 student-athletes expected to attend, it’s one of the largest high school trap events in the country.
Interested students are encouraged to stop by the Trap Team table at next year’s Club Fair. Whether you’re brand new to shooting or you want to expand your skills, the NDA Trap Team is always ready for new team members.
