“We’re looking forward to playing De Pere, as it should be our biggest conference matchup this year,” said Braden Maxfield, a junior on the Notre Dame varsity soccer team.
The season started in late August and will last until the middle of October. The varsity team is ranked in the Division 3 category.
Varsity has won its last five matches, including a major victory over Verona, one of the top teams in the state.
At the match against Verona, the team had the chance to play in Madison. Liam West had the only goal, making the game 1-0.
Throughout the season, the boys play in both conference and non-conference games. If the team does well in the conference games, they could become the conference champions.
The non-conference games prepare the team for the upcoming playoffs. Performing well in the regular season improves the team’s standing in the playoffs.
If the team wants to make it to state, they must first win regionals and sectionals.
“The majority of our starters didn’t graduate last year, so we were able to transition into the year pretty easily,” Maxfield explained.
Jacob Davister, Jacob Broullire, Oakley Prosser and West lead the varsity team. The head coach is Nic Sturdivant.
The team works hard every day after school at practice. They are determined to do their best this year.
One of the team’s biggest goals is to win the gold ball. “We are just trying to do something the past teams couldn’t,” said Maxfield.
The boys are in a very competitive division and are prepared to try their hardest to meet their goals.
There are games at least twice a week, most of which require the team to travel considerable distances.
The next game will take place on Saturday at Homestead High School at 11 a.m. with a game at West DePere on the Tuesday , Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m.
