“I would encourage underclassmen to consider running for Mermaid because if you have the drive and energy for it, then, yes, definitely, and it is what you make of it for sure. I knew I wanted to do it for a while, so I really put in all my effort,” said senior Teya Bordini, this year’s NDA Mermaid..
She tries her best to go to all the sports games, but, of course, football is a big focus. She has been to some of the volleyball games and soccer games, and she hopes to go cheer on cross country soon.
Along with Mermaid Notre Dame Academy also has Fanman, who works with the Mermaid on all the cheering that goes on for all sporting events, especially football.
“Most of the time the ideas for the games just pop into Teya’s or my heads, or someone will come to us with a cool theme or video idea,” said Fanman Thomas Chosa.
Two Fridays ago at a football game Chosa and Bordini handed out pink pom poms for all the students in the stands.
“Cooper Aitkin’s mom had bought 600 pom poms for me to hand out to the student section and parents just because,” said Bordini.
Bordini collected them at the end, hoping to continue to use them for different sports.
Chosa is motivated to do all the special things at football games because he wants to make football games enjoyable for the fans so that everyone can have fun.
He also wants to gain more interest in going to football games that will hopefully spread to other sports.
Even with planning and attending events, Chosa and Bordini find time to get all their homework done.
“It’s definitely stressful, but I always tell myself it is worth it in the end, and having 7th hour study hall and 8th hour off gives me time to do my homework. Regarding the games, I usually plan it out in the beginning of the week with our script/announcement of the theme, talk to Tommy if we should have a tailgate, and then I purchase whatever I think could be handed out to our student section,” said Bordini.
Chosa just takes it week by week for school and works just using his planner and getting as much done as he can during school.
For athletic events Bordini and Chosa have all the games laid out in a google doc so it’s really easy to see who plays when and where.
