After last school year’s break, Notre Dame Academy brought back the PowderPuff game for one of its Funtober events. Students, staff and fans gathered at the newly renovated field on Monday night, October 27, to play and watch the girls flag football tournament.
Teams consisted of girls from each grade and were coached by three members of the varsity football team chosen by powderpuff commissioner and varsity quarterback, Max Peirce.
The event started with a warm-up period at 6:35 pm. Back-to-back games followed shortly after the warm-up. All games were 20 minutes long with a half-time break in each.
Each class battled for a spot in the championship game. The games were fast-paced and exciting to watch.
Varsity football seniors Peirce and Owen Hein acted as the ‘emcees’ for the games. They narrated the updates of the games on the loudspeaker with both skill and humor.
A student-organized pep band provided music throughout most of the event.
The tournament games were refereed by volunteers, mostly other varsity football players.
“It was so fun to finally be back out there with everyone after not having the game last year,” said junior Ellie Rupp.
The seniors came out on top this year, winning the championship game against the juniors. The two teams were back and forth with touchdowns until the second half where the seniors pulled away.
The rules of the tournament emphasized teamwork and good spirits, making the games enjoyable for fans.
“I was so glad I got to experience, and win, the PowderPuff tournament this year. I had so much fun,” said senior Emma Ciak.
