With their season underway the girls basketball team admits they have a lot of high expectations. After all, most of the varsity team members are returning players.
Veterans are Kaia Waldrop, Destiny Webster, Aspen Abel, Brianna Breese, Emma Ciak, Marley Atkinson, Maisie Hinz and Addyson Simpson.
Although many familiar faces are back, the team also feels “new” in some ways.
Waldrop and Abel are back after missing a lot of last season because of injuries, and the team has two new players, freshmen Ava Cumicek and Hadley Stenavich.
Last season ended with a loss in the regional finals to Kimberly, who ended up winning the Division 1 state title.
Abel said, “Last season, the team faced some tough challenges and didn’t win the big games we were hoping for. Injuries throughout the year led players to step into larger roles within the program. It was difficult to stay consistent with so many changes.”
This year’s goals are ambitious.
“The primary goals for this season,” said Ciak, “are to win conference and prove ourselves in the WIAA state tournament. We know that we can compete very well, and we plan on executing that plan.”
Atkinson explained the team’s goals: “Some of our goals for this season are to work together, stay drama-free, bond as a team and trust one another.”
Coach Eliza Campbell shared that the team is focused on winning the conference and making a deep playoff run, with hopes of returning to the Resch Center, where several players have previously competed at the state level.
Hinz highlighted the team motto. “We>Me is our motto,” she explained. “We before me is our way to play for each other before ourselves and our own statistics.”
“My favorite part about being on the team,” said Breese, “is the bonds we make and all the memories we make throughout the season.”
