Senior Aspen Abel has committed to continuing her basketball career at Bemidji State University while pursuing her academics, a degree in nursing. Bemidji State (BSU) is part of the Minnesota State system.
“I made this decision because the coaches truly believe in me, and I’m confident I’ll be able to make an impact there,” said the senior.
Abel added that her recruiting process with Bemidji’s coaching staff made her feel valued.
“They were great throughout my recruiting process by staying connected and making me feel wanted, and I loved how welcoming and friendly my future teammates were,” admitted Abel.
Basketball has been a pillar in Abel’s life for years, both on and off the court.
“I love basketball because it challenges me every day. I enjoy that it’s a team sport where everyone has to work together and be unselfish,” Abel said.
Family played a huge role in Abel’s love for basketball. Her dad coached her on youth travel teams for eight years. Abel also has three older brothers who all played basketball.
“I always had a ball in my hand,” Abel explained.
Abel is a captain on the girls’ basketball program here at Notre Dame Academy. She moved to Green Bay and transferred to NDA during her sophomore year season, and since then she has been a member of the girls’ varsity squad, even having a hand in the team’s state championship run her first year here.
As a leader on her high school team, Abel acknowledges her responsibility.
“I would describe my role as an encouraging and dependable leader,” Abel said. “I try to uplift my teammates, especially during challenging moments and keep a positive mindset after mistakes.”
On the court, Abel’s biggest strengths are her shooting ability, basketball IQ, passing, defense and competitive spirit.
“I’m confident I can make smart, quick decisions and stay composed under pressure,” Abel explained.
“The NDA program has helped shape me through strong coaching and high expectations,” Abel admitted. “I’m very grateful for my coaches, my teammates and every opportunity on the court.”
