“Directing is my passion and being able to work with these students and my fellow directors on a daily basis is a blessing, and I strongly believe in the transformative power of the arts and want to celebrate students’ talents,” said Andrea Gilson.
Gilson has been directing Notre Dame Academy’s musicals for 10 years.
Her best moments are the process itself, watching the show evolve, and working with the cast.
The most challenging thing is dealing with the little things that are sometimes beyond her control like illnesses.
“In order to make the show work everyone needs to be there,” said Gilson.
She goes about choosing which musical to do each year by asking students about feedback regarding shows they are interested in.
“I also look at the size of the cast and pit orchestra and whether the selection would be approved,” said Gilson.
Gilson has accumulated 12 awards through the musicals Footloose, The Little Mermaid, Annie, and Freaky Friday.
The Best Ensemble Awards meant the most to her because putting on a show is a group effort.
Gilson’s family has to sacrifice so much because directing and producing the musical takes up most of her time after school from October to January.
“I am lucky to have a supportive son, daughter and husband,” she said.
She gives shout-outs for all the work her fellow directors do–the vocals, choreography, music and set.
“The special effects, costumes and sets are incredible this year, and we want the show to be a magical and immersive experience for the audience,” said Gilson.
