For senior Sophia Hummel, attending Franciscan University is more than a college decision; it is a continuation of a deeply rooted family tradition shaped by faith.
All four of Hummel’s older siblings have attended Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.
Three have already graduated while one is currently a junior at the university.
“Three of my siblings majored in business and one majored in math,” she shared.
Today, each is actively using their degree, whether it be in managing a company, selling pharmaceutical and medical supplies, or contributing directly to the Franciscan University by creating and coding its website and newsletter.
Inspired by her siblings’ experiences and her own connection to the university, Hummel has chosen to follow the same path.
“I have been accepted to Franciscan and am happy to attend the university, so I feel no need to apply for any backups.” she said.
At the core of her family’s journey is a strong Catholic faith, which Hummel credits primarily to her family.
“My parents have brought us to Mass every Sunday, taught us from a young age to pray everyday and encouraged us to help others,” said Hummel.
Beyond structured religious practice, Hummel noted that her parents taught her to integrate faith naturally into everyday life.
She explained that religiosity is sometimes misunderstood as being overly strict or joyless, but her parents demonstrated that it is possible to enjoy life while keeping God at the center.
“My parents have exemplified the ability to have fun and indulge in comforts while simultaneously having God in the forefront of our minds,” she explained.
Through their example, Hummel and her siblings developed what she described as a healthy, balanced relationship with God.
This foundation of faith combined with academic consistency and family example ultimately shaped Hummel’s decision to attend Franciscan University next fall.
Joining her siblings in the legacy, she also hopes to make her college experience her own.
