“I am one of the two stage managers for the backstage crew. I lead the people who make the Wizard of Oz’s world come to life by moving all the set pieces during the show, and I take care of the stage crew’s roles, props, sets, and communication,” said senior Ngoclam Nguyen.
During the production the managers practice with everyone in the cast, crew, tech and pit orchestra to make sure all aspects of the show work seamlessly together.
Wizard of Oz is an elaborate show, so it is especially important that they keep everything organized backstage.
“I’ve always been in stage crew, and my first show was the spring play Deceiving Granny. The other shows include Annie, Deadly Ernest, Freaky Friday, Snow White and now Wizard of Oz,” said Nguyen.
Nguyen began her stage crew career under stage manager Amanda Hofacker, who graduated in 2024.
“She truly showed me how leadership can be strong, effective, yet still endlessly kind and welcoming. and I truly hope I can make an impact on our stage crew the same way she did mine,” said Nguyen.
One of the largest challenges the managers face is keeping everything in order.
There are so many set pieces, props, and little details to remember throughout the show that it makes keeping things organized and clear all the more important.
“I always loved musicals and wanted to be part of the musical program here, but I am not good at singing and had an injury that made me quit dancing in middle school,” said Jessica Lafond, who manages with Nguyen.
The easiest part is having a good time with everyone backstage and celebrating the success of the cooperative effort that goes into the show.
“My favorite part this year has been working with everyone on Wizard of Oz. and all the directors are so kind, and I am extremely grateful for such a wonderful stage crew this year. Everyone is eager and willing to do their best backstage, and I couldn’t be happier,” said Nguyen.
