“That’s how my brain works. History is fun to me,” said Shane Doherty, Notre Dame’s newest student teacher. He is currently observing Mrs. Holly Hinch and Mrs Danielle Bennett’s classes, but will be teaching next week.
He attended Central Catholic High School in Aurora, Illinois. “It is pretty similar to NDA in some ways,” Doherty added.
His favorite teacher was his high school Spanish teacher, who inspired him to pursue a career in teaching. Although Doherty can not speak Spanish fluently, he can read it.
Doherty is a senior at St. Norbert’s, majoring in history and education. His mother also attended Norbert’s, making him a legacy student.
At SNC he had the opportunity to study in the Czech Republic in the medieval capital of Prague.
“I love medieval history, and after being in a medieval area, it really sparked an interest in me,” Doherty said.
In his spare time he is continuing to learn the language and more about the culture there.
After graduating in May, Doherty hopes to continue his education and get his doctorate in history. He still plans on teaching in Wisconsin, but his dream is to one day teach at an international school.
Doherty’s other interests include playing the guitar and making music. But now he is more focused on teaching and traveling.
This upcoming week, he will teach his first lesson, Hinch’s freshman English class. He will slowly take over teaching all her classes.
He will also be teaching Bennett’s Intro to Social Studies, an introductory class to all future history classes at NDA.
“It’s really exciting to have Mr. Doherty here,” said Bennett. “I look forward to working with him and showing him how I love teaching.”
